Over 12,000 people still in BTAD relief camps

More than 12,000 people displaced in the ethnic violence in the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts (BTAD) areas are still living in relief camps in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts.

An official release said that as many as 12,644 displaced people are still living in 20 relief camps. Of which 4615 are in Kokrajhar district, all of whom belonging to the minority community and 395 Bodo and 7634 minority people are living in camps in Chirang district. The release said that 65persons left the relief camps in the last 24 hours.


The release revealed that at the peak of the clashes in July last year, the total number of inmates increased to more than 4.85 lakh. But with the improvement of the situation, the number gradually decreased in the relief camps.

On the process of rehabilitation, the release said that 17,016 applications were sent to the BTAD authorities in Kokrajhar district, of which, 5482 applications were cleared and 5179 were rehabilitated. In Chirang district, 1076 people were rehabilitated, while, in Dhubri district, 166 families were rehabilitated.

As many as 101 persons lost their lives in the clashes and four of them could not be identified. The Government has so far cleared ex-gratia payment to the next of kin of 82 of those killed and payments were released in regard to 75 of them till date.
