The Union home ministry has issued the much-awaited administrative approval to Cachar-Mizoram Frontier Force of the BSF to erect floodlights along the 138km-long Indo-Bangladesh border in Cachar and Karimganj districts in south Assam, in a bid to improve security.
A senior BSF official today said the Centre has sanctioned Rs 41.92 crore to set up the floodlights along the international boundary by the end of next year to check illegal migration.
He said an electrical firm in New Delhi had been assigned the task to install the floodlights.
On the other hand, two high-level teams of senior officials of BSF and Border Guards, Bangladesh, would hold a three-day conference at Sylhet in Bangladesh from November 8, to discuss border re-demarcation along the 8km unfenced border line in Lathitilla and Dumabari villages in Karimganj district.
Anup Chandra Thaplial, inspector-general of Cachar-Mizoram Frontier Force, which is posted in Masimpur Cantonment near here, will head the Indian delegation during the conference.
BSF sources said the re-demarcation of the borderline could not be undertaken before in wake of the objections raised by the Bangladesh authorities.
Senior officials of both border forces had a preliminary exchange of ideas in regard to the proposed border survey at Lathitilla and Dumabari on October 20 at Suterkandi border checkgate in the run-up to the talks.
BSF officials said the movement of illegal migrants across the border into Assam and the unhindered smuggling of contraband goods from India to Bangladesh and vice-versa continued to be the problem points for border forces of both nations.
The district magistrate of Karimganj, Debeswar Bhattacharjee, had clamped daily night curfew from 9pm along the international border before the Pujas, in order to check the infiltration and inter-country smuggling, particularly of herds of cows to Bangladesh.
Till November 2011, smuggled goods valued at over Rs 248 crore and 103 heads of cattle were seized by BSF forces along the border in Cachar and Karimganj districts.
