Film institute to be renamed after Bhupen Hazarika

The State Government today announced that the Regional Government Film and Television Institute would be renamed as Dr Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film and Television Institute as a mark of honour to the cultural icon.

This announcement was made by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on the occasion of the first death anniversary of the bard whose songs captured the hearts of millions.

Speaking at the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Memorial Lecture and Cultural Programme organized jointly by the Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, the Directorate of Information and Public Relations and the Directorate of Cultural Affairs at Rabindra Bhawan here, Tarun Gogoi said that Dr Bhupen Hazarika was a real mass communicator and that the government would fulfil the vision of the music icon by transforming society through mass communication tools particularly music. “Dr Bhupen Hazarika showed us the way and we will usher in the positive developments in the society through use of mass communication tools,” said Gogoi observing that the Assamese society will overcome all the obstacles and ills through the vision of Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

Gogoi also formally launched the first internet radio of the region E-Gyan Taranga run by the Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, and released a monthly Assamese magazine Asoma published by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations on the occasion.

Delivering the first Dr Bhupen Hazarika Memorial Lecture on the topic ‘Reflections on the State of Television News in India,’ Sunit Tandon, director general of Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi dwelt on the beginning of television news in India, the invasion of satellite channels and the present television news scenario. Tandon said that people’s expectation has been let down by the satellite news channels that are losing balance in an attempt to feed breaking news to the viewers. He pointed out that most news channels consider all means as fair for TRP at the cost of credibility.

Tandon stressed a debate on the need for regulation to ensure that a democratic India enjoys true freedom of the press.

Tandon earlier in his speech said that Dr Bhupen Hazarika lives on in the hearts of the people and that the bard’s positive and humanistic attitude towards life will continue to inspire others.

Tandon released another monthly English magazine Assam Information published by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations at the function.

The function was attended by many prominent citizens including Pranati Phukan, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Basanta Das, Minister of Information and Public Relations.
