Students of Gauhati University shone in a national-level inter-university youth festival organised in Calcutta recently. Representing the state in the festival they bagged three prizes in different categories.
A 23-member student team, under the leadership of Radha Charan Rabha, director of students’ welfare of the university, participated at the 28th Inter University National Youth Festival 2012-13 at Kalyani University in Calcutta and bagged three prizes.
The team bagged the third prize in the cultural procession, fourth in folk music orchestra and third in theatrical-mimicry.
Altogether 1,000 students from 71 universities from across the country participated in the festival where Bombay University emerged as the best team and the Guru Nanak University as the second best.
The team included general secretary of Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU), Sanju Barua, and its present and past cultural secretaries, Kiran Kalita and Kuldip Patgiri, respectively.
The festival was organised by Association of Indian Universities and financed by ministry of youth affairs and sport.
Only those universities who were selected as first and second in the Zonal Youth Festival 2012-13 held in Ranchi University were allowed to participate in the festival.
Vice-chancellor of the university, Okhil Kumar Medhi, congratulated the students for their performance in the festival. PGSU general secretary Sanju Barua said he was very proud of the performance of the students.
He said the performance has shown that the students of Gauhati University have been always good in cultural activities.
“In the cultural procession we performed Bihu to show our rich culture to the students from other universities. Hope the students of the university will be able to perform again at the national level,” he said.
On the other hand, the PGSU has been working to organise a youth festival on the university premises. To make the festival a grand success they will invite Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to the festival.
“We will meet Prime Minister to attend the festival. We are hopeful he would surely participate in the festival,” said Barua.
According to Barua, the estimated budget of the entire festival will be around Rs 60 lakh.
“Yesterday, we also meet chief minister Tarun Gogoi on the issue. He gave us a very good response,” Barua said. He added that the date of the festival has not been fixed yet.
“We will fix the date according to the convenience of the Prime Minister,” he added.
