CCITNO urges Dispur not to allow migrants to settle

The Coordination Committee of Indigenous Tribal National Organisation today accused Dispur of making an attempt to settle illegal migrants in Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) in the name of rehabilitation of riot victims.

The allegation has assumed significance in view of tomorrow’s meeting of the group of ministers in Dispur to review the status of the process of rehabilitation of riot victims.

The committee members today met Prithibi Majhi, the chairman of the cabinet committee on rehabilitation of riot victims in the BTAD, and submitted a memorandum to him demanding that the government must not allow settlement of illegal migrants under any circumstances.

Vice-chairman of the committee Anjali Daimari told the media that if illegal Bangla-deshi nationals are rehabilitated, there might be a repeat of violence that hit Kokrajhar, Chirang and Baksa districts in July. She said the committee had strong reservation agai-nst certain clauses which had been included in the new format to rehabilitate the riot victims in the BTAD. She demanded that the new format must include provisions of date of birth and birthplace of riot victims. “It has come to our knowledge that the high-powered cabinet committee has taken a decision to rehabilitate the illegal migrants on the basis of the electoral rolls of 2011. If it is true, we will be compelled to think that the government has hatched a conspiracy to rehabilitate illegal migrants in the tribal areas and outnumber the indigenous tribal population,” Daimari said.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi recently said nearly four lakh riot victims in the BTAD had gone back to their homes. Daimari said the committee had also gathered information that the government was trying to create new villages inside the BTAD to rehabilitate the people who are currently living in relief camps and do not possess any valid document to prove their citizenship.

“Documents like ration cards and PAN cards must not be accepted by the administration as a proof of citizenship. Land document is essential to prove citizenship,” Daimari said.

She said if the government did not concede to the committee’s demands it would stage a dharna in New Delhi on November 26.
