Traffic violation in Guwahati on rise

Over one lakh cases of traffic violations have been registered by cops in the city till August this year.

The figure points to the fact that large numbers of motorists in the city, “particularly a section of youths”, are showing utter disregard for traffic rules.

According to city traffic police records, altogether 1,01,342 cases of traffic violations were registered in the city till August this year and a whopping Rs 1,91,12,100 has been collected in fines.

“By the end of this year, these figures are likely to cross last year’s sum,” a source in the city police said. Last year, traffic police registered 1,27,660 cases and collected Rs 2,59,86,200 in fines.

According to source, the cases of traffic violations continue to rise in the city. “Traffic rule violation cases have considerably gone up from 41,338 in 2009 to 97,005 in 2010,” he said.

Some common violations witnessed in the city were not wearing helmets, drink driving, three persons riding on a two-wheeler, reckless driving, disobeying traffic signals, driving on the wrong side, using mobile phones while driving and not wearing seatbelts, the source said.

“Young bikers performing stunts and zigzagging through traffic on busy roads have become a major threat to road safety. We have intensified our vigil against these bikers who are mostly school and college students,” he said.

“We are not only coming down heavily on stunt bikers but other errant motorists as well. So, many cases have been registered,” the source said.

The crackdown on errant motorists, however, still does not seem to have yielded the desired results as traffic norms continue to be broken, sometimes even in the presence of traffic cops.

Illegal parking is another menace, which leads to frequent traffic snarls, especially on the arterial roads of the city. But the cops maintain that despite many constraints, such as a shortage of manpower, they are trying their best to curb rule violations.

Currently, the cops have a just over 300 traffic constables against the sanctioned strength of 442, which is grossly inadequate for a city like Guwahati, which has a population of over 12 lakh, the source said.

“Traffic management is the collective responsibility of the traffic police, transport department, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and the district administration. Therefore, better co-ordination with all the agencies is a prerequisite if we have to achieve the desired results,” he added.
