A Guwahati-based advocate, who allegedly assisted car thieves, was arrested by Assam police following a request from their Shillong counterparts.
The arrest came after a Guwahati court provided a transit warrant against advocate Tariqul Islam.
Police will present him before the court tomorrow.
“Islam was arrested for assisting car thieves who had been apprehended earlier from Shillong,” a police official said.
Yesterday, Shillong police had arrested six car thieves identified as Md Nazarul Ali Islam, Raju Boro, Md Hasmad Ali, Raj Thakuria, Kamal Rosaili and K.H Devavarata from Upper Shillong.
The police also recovered a Mahindra Bolero (bearing registration number AS-01AV-5117), which was reportedly stolen from Basistha, Guwahati and a Maruti Wagon-R (ML-05E-7584) used by the arrested.
In another incident, four persons have been arrested by a joint team of Meghalaya and Assam police for their alleged involvement in an arms deal for the Garo National Liberation Army.
The arrested have been identified as Nondolal K. Marak, Ronen Basumatary, Rajkumar Sutradhar and Jayanta K. Sutradhar.
Workshop
A workshop on the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act forthe judiciary, police personnel and other frontline stakeholders will be organised under the joint venture of the director of health services (family welfare), Assam, and Assam Legal Services Authority in Guwahati tomorrow, writes a staff reporter.
