At least 10 poachers armed with .303 rifles still active near Kaziranga

Karbi Anglong police today claimed that there were at least 10 poachers armed with .303 rifles still active near Kaziranga National Park and making plans to kill rhinos.

Diphu police station officer-in-charge, Nabo Bora, told that during the interrogation of various poachers arrested recently, it has come to light that at least 10 poachers are making plans to strike in the park.

“We have shared this information with our Bokakhat counterparts and are working jointly to nab these poachers,” Bora said.

Police have apprehended more than 20 persons, mostly poachers, recently from Karbi Anglong and near the national park, who are directly involved in the recent killing of rhinos.

In a joint operation by the Diphu and Bokakhat police last night near Kaziranga National Park, two poachers, including a school student, were arrested and a .303 rifle and ammunition recovered from different locations.

The police said Tankeswar Pegu, a school student who lived near Agarotali range of the park, has admitted to playing a major role in killing rhinos inside Kaziranga.

“He led a group of poachers inside the park and helped them spot a rhino,” a police official said.

Another poacher, Sashi Doley, was arrested from Paleshguri village near the park. A .303 rifle and 11rounds of ammunition were recovered from the house of Dibyajyoti Doley, who was arrested on November 1, along with Golap Patgiri and Bude Singthe.

The police also recovered a silencer from the house of Patgiri. The park has witnessed the killing of 18 rhinos this year by poachers.
