Another NE student assaulted in Delhi

In yet another incident of students from the North East being subjected to physical and mental abuse, Hriini Pao, a student from Manipur studying at the College of Vocational Science, New Delhi, was severely assaulted by some students of the college on October 26.

Pao was admitted to the trauma centre of the AIIMS from which he was released on November 1.

Calvin Hrangkhol, president of the North East Students’ Society of Delhi University, told that the incident started over a trivial matter when a football being played by some NE students accidentally hit a girl student of the college.

“It was a minor incident and the boys apologised to her and this she accepted good naturedly. But some local students started an altercation with them and beat them up. Later, Pao, a third semester student and who was not in any way associated with the incident, was mercilessly manhandled by a group of some 20 students, necessitating his admission at the AIIMS in a serious condition,” Calvin said, adding that a couple of the college students’ union leaders were also present among the ruffians.

The next day, the North East Students’ Society had a meeting with the ACP and DCP of Delhi, following which three students were arrested and later released on bail.

“We met the college union body as well but no intervention came from it. We also identified six of the culprits and all have been suspended by the DU Vice Chancellor,” Calvin said.

A case has been registered with the Malviya Nagar police station in this connection.

Calvin said that the incident created an unpleasant environment in the college campus, and students of the North East were apprehensive of entering the campus.
