Come February 24, Guwahatians will get to know the Bollywood singer better and see him perform on the concluding day of Pyrokinesis, the cultural event of Assam Engineering College (AEC).
“This is the 10th edition of Pyrokinesis, which is a three-day cultural festival of our institution. The event starts on Friday. The main attraction this year will be Suraj Jagan of 3 Idiots fame, who is scheduled to perform on the night (from 10pm) of February 24,” Kamanasish Chowdhury, publicity co-ordinator of Pyrokinesis, 2013, told The Telegraph today.
The annual event has always charmed young and old alike. In previous years, people flocked to the institution’s Jalukbari campus to see performances by composer duo Vishal-Shekhar, singers Angaraag (Papon) Mahanta, Mohit Chauhan and KK and bands like Parikrama, Jal and Orange Street.
“Besides, bands from the UK have also performed in the previous editions. This year, we had invited Strings, the Pakistani pop rock band. But a visa hassle, following the flare-up along the Line of Control, meant the two-member band could not make it here. Instead, Lucid Recess, a Guwahati-based band, will entertain hard rock lovers,” Chowdhury said.
Over 50 institutions are taking part in Pyrokinesis this year. “IIT-G, NIT Silchar, Jorhat Engineering College, Gauhati Medical College, Tezpur University, Dibrugarh University and Assam University (Silchar) among others have been invited. Besides, schools such as Don Bosco, Holy Child and Kendriya Vidyalaya will take part in IT seminars, computer gaming competitions and science exhibitions,” he said.
Students will compete in altogether 33 events. A prize-money chess contest, conducted by fide arbiter Lakhyajyoti Saikia, is also scheduled on the concluding day.
“A lecture series christened Vis-à-Vis will feature filmmaker Jahnu Barua, Meghalaya governor R.S. Mooshahary and city-based artist Utpal Barua, who earned a gold medal in an Olympic exhibition at Beijing in 2008. It will be part of the festival that culminates with a DJ night. This year’s festival promises to be much bigger than the earlier editions,” Chowdhury added.
