NGO seeks info on missing woman with 'Ulfa links'

Women in Governance (WING), an NGO, on Wednesday demanded that police immediately disclose information about Majoni Das, a 30-year-old woman, who went missing under mysterious circumstances from Sivasagar.

Majoni, a hostel warden, went missing from Sivasagar on February 10. According to the NGO, Majoni was a victim of enforced disappearance as police had suspected that she had links with Ulfa. WING has also asked the Ulfa to clarify whether or not she really joined the outfit.

According to her family members, police used to harass them at regular intervals as Diganta Das, Majoni's younger brother, who was also an alleged Ulfa sympathizer, went missing a decade ago.

They added that local police sent a message asking Majoni to report to the Sivasagar SP on February 6. On February 8, police went to her house to detain her, but she was not at home at that time. On February 10, she left home to meet the SP, but never returned.

The NGO filed a habeas corpus petition at the Gauhati high court on February 18 and an online petition, which was sent to the DGP, state secretary and NHRC on February 16.

"Her family members and employers filed an FIR and also met the SP later. The SP said Majoni had joined the banned outfit and had left for Nagaland. He even asked her father to trace her to Nagaland. Police are not divulging any information. It is still not clear why police wanted her to report to the SP office," said Anju Ara Begum of WING.

"We want police to provide information about her whereabouts and conduct a proper investigation. Police must also stop harassing her family and provide them with protection and as she is belongs to the SC community, the FIR should be put under the provision of the SC/ST PoA Act," said Bondita Acharya of WING.

Left in the lurch, Majoni's family is not only distraught, but also facing economic crisis as she was the sole bread earner of the family. After her brother's disappearance, Majoni's disappearance has only increased the woes of the family.

"My father used to sell fish earlier, but he is now bedridden. Majoni used to run the family and now I am looking after them," said Bharati Hazarika, younger sister of Majoni.
