The two-day nationwide strike called by different trade unions against the Centre’s economic and labour policies hit normal life in the State. Our correspondents add:
Nagaon: The trade union strike paralysed normal life in Nagaon. Post office, banks, LIC office, BSNL offices remained closed. Medicine wholesale dealers closed their shutters.
Most of the business establishment also remained closed. Vehicles remained off the roads exept private cars. Non-availability of buses caused problems for examinees of the ongoing HS and HSLC examinations.
Rangiya: The two-day strike called by the trade unions was total here on the first day today with all government offices, banks and business establishments, schools and colleges remaining closed.
Vehicular movement except for some private vehicles along NH-31 and on the Rangiya-Bhutan section was almost nil. CPM supporters led by ex-MLA Ananta Deka blocked the Up NE Express at Rangiya Station. They were arrested and later released. The bandh caused problems for candidates of the HS first year final examination as there was no mode of road communication.
HAILAKANDI: Life was partly hit in Hailakandi district on the first day of the two-day nationwide strike called by the 11 trade unions in support of their various demands.
Various other organisations and employees’ unions have also extended support to the strike. Post offices, insurance offices, banks, power distribution companies and educational institutions remained closed in the district. Trains and buses under ASTC remained off the road.
Tinsukia: The nationwide strike affected normal life in Tinsukia district today. ASTC-operated buses and petroleum product carrying tankers etc. remained off the roads. Financial institutions including banks and insurance companies kept their shutters down. However, barring big trading houses many of the shops and some petrol depots remained open.
Biswanath Chariali: The two-day nation wide strike called by 11 trade unions was total today in Biswanath and Gohpur subdivisions. All the business establishments, shops, PSU banks, post offices and government offices remained closed. Several trade unions took out processions. However, no untoward incident was reported.
DULIAJAN: The 2-day nationwide strike called by trade unions against Centre’s economic and labour policies, hit normal life in Duliajan and its surrounding areas. Oil India Limited and Assam Gas Company Limited were hit with only skeleton operations going on during this period. Police apprehended around 72 picketers from the oil township in the morning hours and later released them.
Bongaigaon: The two-day srike had a total impact in Bongaigaon and Chirang districts. Banks, insurance offices, some educational institutions, offices, markets and shops were closed. Railway workshops at Bongaigaon and New Bongaigaon were hit as most workers were absent. Bongaigaon Refinery at Dhaligaon in Chirang district also felt the impact of the strike.
